B.U.R. System (Built Up Roof)
Built up roof membranes, referred to by the acronym BUR, have been used for more then 100 years. These roof systems are commonly referred to as “tar and gravel” roofs. These roofs are composed of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing felts that create a finished membrane. The number of plies in a cross section is the number of plies on the roof. The term “4 plies” accounts for the amount of layers with asphalt in between.
Systems
Single Ply Membrane
Single-ply roofing materials can be installed directly on the approved roofing substrate. This can drastically reduce installation time, material cost and also allows for easier installation. The performance, cost and installation advantages of single-ply materials compared to traditional multi-layered systems has greatly increased their acceptance in the market. There are three popular types of single-ply low-slope roof projects: EPDM, PVC and TPO.
Modified Bitumen Membrane
Modified Bitumen roofing materials consist of a base ply membrane and a granulated cap ply membrane. This system has been a popular option for many years but could only be installed with hot asphalt or a torch-on application. The risk has been mitigated with the major manufacturers developing a self adhered system with a similar end result.
Shingle Roofing
There are many different manufacturers who design and manufacture shingles for a both residential and commercial application. There are a variety of options and warranties offered with these selections. New construction or reroof installation should be very similar consisting of underlayment protection and new accessories including vents, valleys, etc.
